The BLUGH: March 5, 2025

Beauty is simply reality seen with the eyes of love.
— Epictetus

The price of peace? Not having juicy stories to BLUGH about to entertain my readers. And let me tell you, it’s worth every penny!! Peace wealth is my goal.

Don’t worry though. I overthink things and in so doing I come up with lots of random theories about life which I treat as canonical truths that others may find entertaining. My invented theories are not backed by fluffy things like “research” or “science” or “data”, but are dogmatic to my existence nonetheless.

The latest theory I have created is that icy weather brings out the best in us. About 5 weeks ago, it was snowy and I-C-Y in New York and it was treacherous to take a walk! But on a cold and icy day, walk I did because I needed a croissant. Responsible renters and homeowners were out salting and clearing snow and ice from the sidewalks. Every person that I walked by in pursuit of my croissant looked me in the eye, SMILED, and told me to “be careful” or “watch my step” or “that came fast!” or some equally adorable and caring quip. Every. Single Person. It kind of took my breath away. Strangers don’t positively acknowledge each other up here as a rule and that is fine! It’s the culture! When I come back after a trip in SC and linger in my glances with other pedestrians assuming we will exchange a smile and nod, I look like a longing Dickensian heroine in need of someone to acknowledge my existence. Well, I got that acknowledgement when the magic snow/ice weather came through. It was seriously like a spell took over the neighborhood and I loved it. And the croissant I ended up getting? Best I’ve had in my life.

But ice melts and the world keeps turning. It is starting to warm up here and so I will endeavor to walk straight and not make eye contact with humans (you can’t stop me from making eye contact with your dog though).

PRODUCT RECOMMENDATION

Not so much a recommendation as a look into the life and choices of Justina✨. When I was in 5th grade, I NEEDED big chunky shoes. Do you know what I mean?!!? I think they were called Dockers or they were made by Dockers…? My Google investigations came up pretty empty. They looked something like Figure E in this nostalgic image. Unfortunately, an adult bought these for me and I looked really silly. I had really skinny legs and the leg circumference to shoe size ratio was not it!!

My love for big chunky shoes is still strong though! My legs are thicker and I like wide legged jeans, so the lewk has improved. These are the current chunks of choice but always looking to unlock the next level of thiccccness in a shoe.

BOOK RECOMMENDATION

To be honest, this book is the opposite of peace. I really enjoyed it, though, and I think Julia Fox is inspiring, exciting, interesting, tough, cool, funny, weird, smart, creative, and so and and so forth. As most books I recommend on the BLUGH, I thought Down the Drain was a riveting read. I also thinks it has some lessons and messages and really enjoyed her point of view and her writing style.

To be honest, in the 5 or so days it took me to read it, I had a very special ritual. I would pour myself a tiny glass of sake and sip on it as I furiously powered through the book. Why sake? LITERALLY NO IDEA. I read this pre-Japan trip. There is also no mention of sake in the book. And then when I was done with the book I was also done with sake. I have no idea.

TO WATCH

You guys!!! This movie is the best movie I’ve seen in years. Conclave who? It is so so so so so good and I need to you to set aside 4 hours to watch it and then GET BACK TO ME.

Yes, I am interested in the book, but I saw it and at a bookstore recently and it weighed 14 pounds. Just not good for the subway commute. Any readers of this tome out there? Did you enjoy it? Lemme know!!

Happy NY anniversary to us

Look at these children! They’ve just arrived in NY in their rental minivan. They are willing to give NY “1 or 2 years” to see how they like it. They are VERY excited for their Improv Level 1 class starting at the Magnet the following week. They have no idea how amazing their lives will be for moving here.
